Your tax code is given to you by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) which determines your income tax obligations \u2013 this means how much money will be deducted from your wages.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your tax code considers various factors such as employment circumstances, personal allowances and any additional income sources or reliefs you are entitled to.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is BR tax code?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there is a full list of tax codes and they all mean something different, the BR tax code is very common. This code means you\u2019ll be taxed on all of your income at the current basic rate of income tax at 20%. If you\u2019re on this code for the entire year and your total income is less than \u00a350,270 for 23\/24, it\u2019s likely that you will be in a tax refund position at the end of the tax year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emergency tax codes<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The use of an emergency tax code may seem alarming, especially when starting a new job but it happens when HMRC don\u2019t have enough information about your financial situation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emergency tax codes are used to ensure you pay an amount of tax until your employer receives the necessary details from HMRC. This may mean that you end up paying more tax at first, but this will be adjusted if necessary when HMRC gets all the information they need from your new employer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An emergency tax code can be identified with an X suffix.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A list of common tax codes and what they mean<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the reasons why tax codes can be confusing is because there are so many of them. Tax codes come in various forms as each have different implications based on an individual\u2019s circumstances. Some tax codes are more common than others and therefore you may already be familiar with some.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s take a look at a list of tax codes and what they mean.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1257L<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the most common tax code and is the standard tax code for individuals entitled to the basic tax-free personal allowance, set at \u00a312,570 for the 24\/25 tax year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">D0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This code is designated for individuals paying tax at the higher rate, currently set at 40% for earnings between \u00a350,271 and \u00a3150,000.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">D1<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The D1 tax code is allocated to individuals with earnings surpassing \u00a3150,000, attracting the additional rate of 45%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">K Code<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A K code means that a pay adjustment has been added, rather than subtracted from the amount of taxable pay. This means there will be an increase to the amount of taxable pay compared to the actual pay.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">M Suffix<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An M suffix means there is an increase to the personal allowance as part of the Marriage Allowance Legislation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">N Suffix<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An N Suffix means there is a decrease to the personal allowance as part of the Marriage Allowance Legislation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T Suffix<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This code appears if HMRC is reviewing any items of a tax code.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How Are Tax Codes Worked Out?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that you know more about tax codes and what they mean you may have a better understanding of which apply to you. The tax codes are worked out as HMRC calculates tax codes based on information from your P45 (from your previous employer) or P60 (at the end of the tax year). You should get in touch with HMRC online, by phone, or by post to report any discrepancies or changes in circumstances that may impact your tax code.
