{"id":101815,"date":"2025-02-21T16:43:35","date_gmt":"2025-02-21T16:43:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/alcohol\/english-whisky-gi-proposal-provokes-swa-criticism-drinks-international\/"},"modified":"2025-02-21T16:43:35","modified_gmt":"2025-02-21T16:43:35","slug":"english-whisky-gi-proposal-provokes-swa-criticism-drinks-international","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=101815","title":{"rendered":"English whisky GI proposal provokes SWA criticism &#8211; Drinks International"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The UK\u2019s Department for Environment, Food &amp; Rural Affairs has this week begun consultation on the proposal which would protect the names \u2018English whisky\u2019 and \u2018English whiskey\u2019 a geographical indication under the UK government\u2019s Spirit Drinks Geographical Indications Scheme.<\/p>\n<p>The proposed product specification summarises English whisky as a spirit \u201cmade from UK cereal grain and English water\u201d, \u201cdistilled in England\u201d, \u201cdistilled at an alcoholic strength of less than 94.8% by volume in such a way that the distillate has an aroma and taste derived from the materials used\u201d, \u201cmatured in England in wooden casks, such as oak (but not limited to), of no more than 700 litres for a minimum of 3 years\u201d, and \u201cthe final whisky to have a minimum 40% abv\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The SWA has slammed the proposal, warning that it could damage the reputation of UK single malt.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for the Scotch Whisky Association said: \u201cThe proposal to define \u2018Single Malt\u2019 English\u00a0Whisky only requires\u00a0distillation at the single distillery location\u00a0and not the creation of the spirit from malted barley at a single site.\u00a0This is entirely inconsistent with the reputation of single malt whisky,\u00a0which is famous for its integral connection to place, and would undermine the Single Malt Scotch Whisky category.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt would be very damaging for the reputation of single malt whisky from the UK, and by extension Single Malt Scotch Whisky, if English Whiskies were allowed to describe spirit as \u2018Single Malt\u2019 despite being produced in a different manner to the established process and long-standing traditions of the Scotch Whisky industry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will be responding formally to the DEFRA consultation to robustly defend against any devaluation of the Single Malt category.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A Defra spokesman said: \u201cNo decisions have been made on whether to recognise English Whisky as a geographical indication (GI) \u2013 the application process is ongoing.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The UK\u2019s Department for Environment, Food &amp; Rural Affairs has this week begun consultation on the proposal which would protect the names \u2018English whisky\u2019 and \u2018English whiskey\u2019 a geographical indication under the UK government\u2019s Spirit Drinks Geographical Indications Scheme.
