Poe<\/span><\/em><span>\u201d. Overall, the tales are traditionally spooky, with a couple of exceptions, and combined with Fulcher\u2019s measured yet descriptive prose provide spine-tinglingly creepy reading.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"uAov7 AFgAK yT--P _8j14K\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-ybilp1150\"><span class=\"WozF8 yT--P\"><span>Subtle yet comparable themes thread through several stories, from the settings to character motivation. Often the individuals subjected to terror are either vulnerable or possibly not quite reliable, yet all are credible characters and the horror is believable.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"uAov7 AFgAK yT--P _8j14K\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-uaf521152\"><span class=\"WozF8 yT--P\"><span>Fulcher knowingly draws on some recognizable horror tropes yet without tokenism. There is a pleasantly familiar feel to the stories for fans of the genre, but Fulcher employs a wealth of snappy and inventive twists, making the collection feel intriguingly fresh.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"uAov7 AFgAK yT--P _8j14K\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-rnqpg1154\"><span class=\"WozF8 yT--P\"><span>The first tale, \u201c<\/span><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>Marienburg Castle<\/span><\/em><span>\u201d was horribly atmospheric and one of a triumvirate set in a time of combat adding an additionally disturbing layer to the narrative. Fulcher\u2019s writing shivers with dread and unease from the opening paragraph and although barely four pages long, the characters, especially Walker, are immediately engaging.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"uAov7 AFgAK yT--P _8j14K\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-zg6761158\"><span class=\"WozF8 yT--P\"><span>The titular story, \u201c<\/span><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>The Pumpkin King<\/span><\/em><span>\u201d, is a masterclass in a short horror. Simple, effective, and psychologically nasty. Similarly, the other gourd-related tale, \u201c<\/span><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>Pumpkin Seed Spit<\/span><\/em><span>\u201d, was one of the strongest with a surreal, visual quality and a dark 80s schlock-horror vibe.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"uAov7 AFgAK yT--P _8j14K\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-8u69l1164\"><span class=\"WozF8 yT--P\"><span>A couple have a tiny sprinkling of occasional humor, \u201c<\/span><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>Heavenly Strains<\/span><\/em><span>\u201d and \u201c<\/span><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>A Matter of Taste<\/span><\/em><span>\u201d have subdued comic asides and, in both, slightly pathetic protagonists.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"uAov7 AFgAK yT--P _8j14K\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-t493k1170\"><span class=\"WozF8 yT--P\"><span>In \u201c<\/span><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>The Man Next Door<\/span><\/em><span>\u201d, the chilling weirdness is enhanced by using the perspective of Billy, a child, and the contrast of Fulcher\u2019s nicely realized sun-bleached, late 70s setting.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"uAov7 AFgAK yT--P _8j14K\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-913ko1174\"><span class=\"WozF8 yT--P\"><span>The sixth story, \u201c<\/span><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>My Days With Mahalia<\/span><\/em><span>\u201d is unfolded in epistolary form and features a B-17 aircraft, one of a number to do so. Like the majority of Fulcher\u2019s distilled narratives, the fear comes from the unknown or the unsaid with both reader and protagonist using their imagination to drive the horror.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"uAov7 AFgAK yT--P _8j14K\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-cuxwc1178\"><span class=\"WozF8 yT--P\"><span>\u201c<\/span><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>Merry are We of the Lake<\/span><\/em><span>\u201d is brushed with science-fiction and lovely, descriptive imagery. Likewise, \u201c<\/span><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>Dreaming, The Copper City<\/span><\/em><span>\u201d with its whiff of futurism. \u201c<\/span><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>A Night for Animals<\/span><\/em><span>\u201d and \u201c<\/span><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>The Watcher\u2019s Web<\/span><\/em><span>\u201d flicker across into fantasy and retribution. \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"uAov7 AFgAK yT--P _8j14K\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-p8nj11188\"><span class=\"WozF8 yT--P\"><span>A couple are a little too abrupt; \u201c<\/span><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>Night Flight<\/span><\/em><span>\u201d feels underdeveloped and \u201c<\/span><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>For the Children<\/span><\/em><span>\u201d is a touch abstruse. \u201c<\/span><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>A Night Out Mr. Bones<\/span><\/em><span>\u201d was slightly predictable.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"uAov7 AFgAK yT--P _8j14K\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-63blb1196\"><span class=\"WozF8 yT--P\"><span>However, \u201c<\/span><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>Extra! Extra!<\/span><\/em><span>\u201d and \u201c<\/span><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>The Flight Dummy<\/span><\/em><span>\u201d simmer with macabre, grisly violence. The latter is especially frightening with the added fear factor of an unmanned passenger jet flying at altitude and, consequently, a chillingly desperate and thought-provoking ending.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"uAov7 AFgAK yT--P _8j14K\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-zxjbv1202\"><span class=\"WozF8 yT--P\"><span>The last three stories differ gently, shot through with a dark, mythical air and a generous pinch of folkloric horror, qualities which are foregrounded by Fulcher\u2019s softly archaic register.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"uAov7 AFgAK yT--P _8j14K\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-1qs091204\"><span class=\"WozF8 yT--P\"><span>The first of the concluding trio, \u201c<\/span><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>The Huntress<\/span><\/em><span>\u201d has a rich, gothic sensuousness inspired by Wilde\u2019s <\/span><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>Dorian Gray<\/span><\/em><span>\u00a0but very much its own compelling tale. \u201c<\/span><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>The Faerie Lights<\/span><\/em><span>\u201d tips a nod to <\/span><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>The Brothers Grimm<\/span><\/em><span>\u00a0and the shadowy, eldritch \u201c<\/span><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>The October Man<\/span><\/em><span>\u201d unsettles with preternatural unearthliness, and lingers with sinister poignancy. It was the perfect choice for the closing tale.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"uAov7 AFgAK yT--P _8j14K\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-xfw8r2240\"><span class=\"WozF8 yT--P\"><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>The Pumpkin King and Other Tales of Terror<\/span><\/em><span>\u00a0is a neatly crafted grimoire of ghoulishness.
