Hiking Ella Rock is fun, confusing, taxing and rewarding. Step down onto the tracks and walk on from there. Don\u2019t worry about the sign warning against entry; everyone, including the locals, do it every day and no one will stop you.<\/p>\n<p>The walk is reminiscent of the classic movie <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3S5bTG6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Stand By Me<\/a>, so take your time and enjoy the view. Take note, however, that this is a working railway so be aware of trains and move off the track if one approaches.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Update 24-Dec-2023:<\/strong> A recent hiker emailed to say that the gate to enter the train station may be closed. Walk along the tracks for approximately 40 minutes. You will eventually arrive at <strong>Kithalella railway station<\/strong>. It\u2019s also possible to start your hike from here\u00a0if you prefer although you\u2019ll have to organise a taxi\/tuk-tuk to the station. <\/p>\n<p>From Kithalella, continue walking along the tracks past the station. <strong>Ignore<\/strong> anyone that says you\u2019re going the wrong way, or who tries to direct you to the \u2018correct\u2019 route. Touts do this to confuse tourists into buying their services as a guide.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Update 25-Sep-2017:<\/strong> A comment from a reader has warned that there are even fake signs now, so be sure to follow our instructions carefully. After 5-10\u00a0minutes, look out for a <strong>rock marked with a blue arrow<\/strong> and a label which reads \u2018Ella Rock\u2019. Turn left at this juncture. Follow the path and <strong>cross the footbridge<\/strong>. After the bridge, you will come to a fork in the road. Take the left path (shown in the video below). The alternative path also leads to the top but it meanders more and is more likely to get you lost.<\/p>\n<p>5. Stay on the path up into the tea plantation. Soon after, you will pass some long grass and may start to doubt that you\u2019re on the right trail. Keep going. To do this, go back to the interim viewing point and simply follow tourists heading in the opposite direction of the path that led you there.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Update 31 March 2024:<\/strong> An email from John has told us that there is now a charge of 930 LKR ($3.10 USD) for adults and 450 LKR ($1.50 USD) for children to access the main viewpoints. A ticket office and toilets have been installed. The lower viewpoints are still free.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ella Rock hiking tips<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Start early:<\/strong> The midday sun is extremely strong so start your hike to Ella Rock early. Aim to leave Ella railway station no later than 9am.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wear sensible shoes:<\/strong> The hike to Ella Rock is steep towards the end and can be slippery after rain, so wear appropriate shoes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pack the basics:<\/strong> As with any hike, don\u2019t neglect the basics. Take plenty of water, snacks, sunscreen and insect repellent. I had to pause for a snack break in the steep final stretch as I was very\u00a0low on energy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Avoid touts:<\/strong> On two separate occasions, we were told by touts that we had gone wrong. We thanked them politely and continued on our planned path to the summit of Ella Rock. One couple we met at the top said they were taken from the right path onto a more convoluted route and then asked for a tip. Trust your instincts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Avoid leeches:<\/strong> We read that there were leeches on the path to Ella Rock, so wore full-length trousers but saw nothing of these slimy creatures. To avoid getting too hot, wear zip-offs that you can put on when walking through tall grass and take off again when desired.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tell us how it went!<\/strong> We update this guide every few months so please <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasandboots.com\/travel-blog\/ella-rock-how-to-hike-it-yourself\/mailto:contact@atlasandboots.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">email us<\/a> to tell us about your hike to Ella Rock or if anything has changed since our last visit.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ella Rock hike: the essentials<\/h2>\n<p><strong>What: <\/strong>Hiking Ella Rock in Sri Lanka.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where: <\/strong>We booked our stay fairly late so ended up on the main thoroughfare at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.booking.com\/hotel\/lk\/dream-cafe-ella.html?aid=883950&amp;no_rooms=1&amp;group_adults=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Ella Dream Cafe<\/a>. While the rooms were lovely and spacious, they were also ridiculously noisy (a mixture of traffic, tourists and thumping music from the adjacent bar). <\/p>\n<p>Instead, we recommend Lonely Planet\u2019s suggestions of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.booking.com\/hotel\/lk\/ella-flower-garden-resort.html?aid=883950&amp;no_rooms=1&amp;group_adults=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Ella Flower Garden Resort<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.booking.com\/hotel\/lk\/zion-view.html?aid=883950&amp;no_rooms=1&amp;group_adults=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Zion View Ella<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When: <\/strong>The best time to visit Ella is Dec-Mar when the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.booking.com\/region\/lk\/badulla.html?aid=883950&amp;no_rooms=1&amp;group_adults=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Hill Country<\/a> is driest. The shoulder season of April and Sep-Nov is a\u00a0decent time to visit while the Yala monsoon season of May-Aug brings rain to the Hill Country.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How:\u00a0<\/strong>If\u00a0you\u2019re planning on doing more hiking around Sri Lanka it\u2019s worth investing in a decent map.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2t6OYRF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Sri Lanka 1:500,000 + city plans waterproof travel map<\/a>\u00a0is by far the best map available for hiking in Sri Lanka.\u00a0On one side of the\u00a0map is relief shading, spot heights and names of mountain ranges and prominent peaks.<\/p>\n<p>You can reach Ella by rail from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasandboots.com\/things-to-do-in-colombo-sri-lanka\/\">Colombo<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasandboots.com\/things-to-do-in-kandy-sri-lanka\/\">Kandy<\/a> (check the<a href=\"http:\/\/slr.malindaprasad.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> timetable here<\/a>; note that \u2018Ella\u2019 is spelt \u2018Elle\u2019 in the search dropdown).<\/p>\n<p>There are various <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ntc.gov.lk\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bus routes<\/a> available depending on your point of origin. It\u2019s worth noting that we found bus travel to be quite stressful in Sri Lanka so you may wish to take a transfer instead. Your hotel can arrange this but it\u2019s always worth negotiating a discount as these are usually inflated (e.g. if quoted 15,000 LKR, ask for 11,000).<\/p>\n<p>Many tourists opt to hire a driver for the entirety of their trip. This costs around $45 USD per day (including the days you don\u2019t use the driver). We used Ajaa (+94 777 284 178) and Sisi (+94 777 203 083) for shorter transfers and found them to be friendly and reliable.<\/p>\n<p>Most international flights land at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB).
