UAE weather: Red alert issued as fog hits parts of the country

The UAE’s red fog alert is in place until 10am today, with residents urged to take care on the roads as visibility remains reduced in some areas

Residents across the UAE can expect the red alert for fog to remain in place until 10am on Sunday, September 27, with the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) warning of reduced visibility in some coastal and inland areas.

The alert was issued from 11pm on Saturday night and is expected to end this morning. Motorists should continue to take care, particularly on roads where fog or mist is affecting visibility.

The NCM said conditions are expected to become humid again overnight and into Monday morning across some coastal and inland areas, meaning there could be another chance of fog or mist forming.

Once the fog clears, Sunday is expected to be generally fair to partly cloudy, with clouds likely to develop over eastern parts of the country. Some of these clouds could become convective during the afternoon, bringing the possibility of rainfall.

Temperatures will remain warm, despite the UAE officially entering autumn earlier this week. The mercury is expected to reach 39°C in Abu Dhabi and 38°C in Dubai, while temperatures could climb as high as 43°C in some parts of the country. Overnight lows are expected to reach around 29°C in both Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

Autumn has officially arrived

The UAE officially entered autumn on September 23, marking the end of the summer season and the beginning of a gradual shift towards cooler weather. According to astronomical calculations, autumn began at 4.05am that day.

However, residents should not expect an immediate drop in temperatures. The beginning of autumn in the UAE can still be very warm, with average highs around 39°C. Temperatures are expected to gradually ease as the season progresses, with average highs forecast to fall to around 31°C by early November.

The first half of autumn is also expected to bring higher humidity, particularly overnight and during the early morning. This can create the right conditions for fog and mist to develop, making visibility warnings increasingly common as the UAE moves away from the peak summer heat.
