There are romances that begin the moment two people meet.

And then there are romances that take years to begin, even though the two people have known each other all along.

When I began writing A Shadow Amongst the Roses, the second book in my Hartleigh Inheritance series, I knew Lady Eliza Thornhaven and Thomas Grey already had a history.

Not a romantic history.

That distinction mattered to me.

Thomas had grown up at Hartleigh alongside Eliza’s late husband, Adrian, and Adrian’s cousin Nathaniel Draycott. Eliza knew Thomas when they were younger. He was part of a familiar world, someone whose character she already understood.

Then life carried them in different directions.

Eliza married Adrian. She loved him. They made a home together at Thornhaven and built a life she valued deeply.

Thomas went on with his own life and eventually became estate manager at Hartleigh Hall.

Years passed.

By the time Eliza and Thomas find themselves spending time together again, neither is quite the person the other remembers.

And yet, in all the ways that matter, they are.

That’s what fascinated me about writing their romance.

They haven’t become different people. They’ve become more fully themselves.

Seeing Someone You Already Know

There’s a particular intimacy in falling in love with someone whose character you don’t have to discover.

Eliza already knows Thomas is dependable.

She knows he is intelligent and capable. She knows he doesn’t need to dominate a room to have authority in it. She knows he listens before he speaks and that when something needs doing, Thomas generally gets on with doing it.

None of this is new information.

What’s new is Eliza.

She married and loved, lost her husband, grieved him, and continued the life they built together. She has managed Thornhaven herself, balanced accounts, made difficult decisions, dealt with tenants and responsibilities, and learned exactly what she is capable of.

Thomas has grown, too. The steadiness Eliza remembers now has years of experience behind it. So do his judgment and his confidence.

And when they meet again as the people they’ve become, familiar things begin to look different.

Sometimes very different.

And Then There Were the Sleeves

There is a scene in A Shadow Amongst the Roses in which Eliza comes upon Thomas working near a drainage trench.

His coat is folded over a fence.

His hands are covered with earth.

And his sleeves are rolled above his forearms.

Now, Eliza has seen Thomas work before.

She knows he’s competent.

That’s hardly a revelation.

But she notices him.

I could tell you that what catches her attention is entirely Thomas’s practical knowledge of estate drainage.

I could.

But this is a romance.

Let’s not be ridiculous.

What catches Eliza off guard isn’t that Thomas has suddenly become someone else. It’s that he hasn’t.

This is Thomas.

The man she has known for years.

And apparently, at some point while they were both busy living their lives, Thomas became a man she finds rather difficult not to notice.

The physical awareness is new.

The man isn’t.

And I think that’s part of what makes their romance so much fun.

The Person You Need Now

Of course, rolled-up sleeves can only take a romance so far.

What ultimately draws Eliza toward Thomas is something much quieter.

He sees her.

Not the Marchioness of Thornhaven. Not Adrian’s widow. Not a woman who needs to be protected from difficult decisions.

Eliza.

Thomas knows what she can do.

He respects her judgment. Her competence doesn’t threaten him. He doesn’t need to take charge simply to prove that he can.

And perhaps most importantly, he doesn’t ask her to become less so that there will be room in her life for him.

There is a moment in the story when Eliza has been dealing with a difficult situation inside Hartleigh. Later, when she sees Thomas again, she realizes something.

He hadn’t been there.

Not because he was avoiding her. Not because he didn’t care what happened.

Thomas knew she could handle it.

Of course she could.

At first, his absence tells her he trusts her.

But eventually, Eliza has to confront a much more complicated truth.

She wants him there.

There is a tremendous difference between needing someone to manage your life and choosing someone to share it.

For Eliza, that difference matters.

Maybe Love Isn’t Always About Finding Someone New

That’s the idea I kept returning to while writing Eliza and Thomas.

We talk so often about finding the right person, as though love is necessarily waiting somewhere beyond the next door.

But sometimes the person isn’t new.

Sometimes what changes is us.

Experience alters what we recognize. Loss teaches us what matters. Time gives qualities we once took for granted an entirely different weight.

The person who would not have been right for us at twenty-one may be exactly right at thirty—not because either person has become unrecognizable, but because both finally understand themselves well enough to recognize what is standing in front of them.

Eliza and Thomas don’t get a second chance at love.

They never had a first chance.

Instead, they get something I found even more interesting to write: the right chance.

And yes.

There are rolled-up sleeves.

I make no apologies.
