Tammy Peterson, Catholic convert, podcast host, and wife of well-known psychologist Jordan Peterson, sat down for an interview with the National Catholic Register ahead of Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen’s beatification, saying he was “a great figure for people to look to” as they seek meaning, and ultimately divine love, in their lives.
“He was a complicated intellectual figure,” she said, noting that Sheen lived a life of deep devotion from a very young age, observing a Holy Hour each day for about 60 years.
“He said he wasn’t perfect. None of us are perfect, and he knew that too. So, he’s a really great figure for people to look to, to think, ‘Maybe if I was careful, maybe I could live a life that was meaningful and that it would take me somewhere where I could have love in my life and offer love in my life,” she said.
“Because really, when it comes down to all those other things that we look for, if there’s no love, then we feel lost,” Peterson said.
Peterson was received into the Catholic Church in 2023, after experiencing an unexplained healing from a rare and serious form of kidney cancer, which she recounted to the Register’s Solene Tadie.
She was among the featured speakers at the Fulton Sheen Movement’s “America’s Saint Conference,” held on Wednesday at St. Louis. As a “celebrity convert,” Peterson’s presence at his beatification was particularly appropriate. Throughout his priesthood, Fulton Sheen had a seemingly unquenchable appetite for making converts to the Catholic faith. He famously offered to give anyone who asked instruction in the faith, and the list of converts attributed to him is lengthy and includes well-known cultural and political figures.
