Bint El-Balad: Who Decides Our Culture?

Popular Arab artists, Saint Levant and Mohammed Assaf, recently dropped a song together titled “Maskara.” The lyrics of the song focus on Arab culture, specifically family, marriage, and Arab women. Within their lyrics, they make references to the term Bint el-Balad, meaning “daughter of the country.” Many Arab women on social media began using the song to show off their traditional clothing, dancing to the song and resonating with the lyrics. Controversy ensued as people began to debate the definition of Bint el-Balad, and what it truly means to hold that title.
Historically, the term Bint el-Balad referred to a woman who had great knowledge of her land, culture and traditional values. Bint el-Balad is a woman who embodies strength and resilience, her roots in her land and her community. The debate online misconstrues this definition, rather attributing it to a narrow checklist of domestic expectations. Under their cultural definition, Bint el-Balad is a submissive woman who stays at home, cooks and cleans. This definition not only dilutes the true meaning, but also pushes traditional stereotypes that have negatively influenced the Arab community for years.
The True Meaning of Bint el-Balad
To understand how misinformed this online debate is, one has to look at what Bint el-Balad has historically represented across the Arab world. Bint el-Balad was never known to be a passive figure. She was a pillar of her community. A leader who displayed independence and resilience through her understanding of her culture and community. She took care of her people, but she never failed to hold her own. Bint el-Balad is an embodiment of cultural pride and community understanding, things that could not have occurred had she been tucked away at home.
This understanding of Bint el-Balad highlights the true role of Arab women in our communities. Whether through planning social gatherings, managing local markets, or even spearheading activism, Arab women have consistently been the backbone of Arab communities and culture.
New Age, New Perspectives
Today, Bint el-Balad is now understood through many different lenses. As new communities claim (or reclaim) this term, new perspectives arise. However, some new views emerging on social media did not foster cultural understanding. Rather, some creators used the term to reduce a rich history into narrow, misguided ideologies. A discussion about how Arab women embodied independence, community leadership and tradition across centuries got lost. Instead, we were left with short-form videos telling women that their worth as a Bint el-Balad is measured by domestic labor.
The real danger of this trend is how it affects the new generation. For many young Arabs who use social media to stay connected to their roots, these misguided takes end up replacing real history with false narratives. This diminishes the genuine diversity of Arab culture, creating internalized misconceptions and reinforcing traditional stereotypes.
Who Decides Our Culture?
This debate ultimately raises a much bigger question for the new generation of Arabs: Who decides our culture?
Is our culture defined by our stereotypes? Does it rely on the opinions of others? Or is it an evolving living history of those who came before us, the women who built and sustained our culture?
Culture is not a set of rules or job description. The real Bint el-Balad was involved in her community, upholding her culture with pride and empowering her community. Refusing to rewrite Arab history means rejecting the dilution of our heritage into harmful stereotypes. We reclaim Bint el-Balad by remembering that our culture belongs to those who live its true meaning, despite those who try to define it for us.
