If you’re like most people, the prospect of telling your boss that you’re quitting your job makes you anxious – how will she react? Will she guilt-trip you or feel betrayed that you accepted a new high-profile project when you were planning to leave? What if she makes a counter-offer to try to get you to stay?
Not everyone gets nervous about quitting, of course; some people fantasize about doing it for months before it happens, and some are downright giddy when the time comes. (Let’s never forget the person who worked at a seafood counter and gleefully resigned by spelling out “I QUIT” in cod.)
But often the logistics trip people up: When and how are you supposed to tell your boss? Do you have to write a resignation letter? How much notice do you really need to give? Should you be honest in your exit interview, and can you decline one altogether?
At New York Magazine today, I run through the whole process. Head over there to read it.
