Duda Takes 2026 Wins Lead In Titled Tuesday

In the last Titled Tuesday before big changes coming shortly, GM Jan-Krzysztof Duda took home victory with a 9.5/10 start, while GM Arjun Erigaisi came in second place with a 9.5/10 finish after missing the first round. Due to Arjun’s missing round, tiebreaks favored Duda, giving him his fourth win of the year to break a tie with GMs Magnus Carlsen, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, and Javokhir Sindarov for the most in 2026 so far.

The next Titled Tuesday tournament comes on September 1, and for the first time in months there will be a corresponding Titled Tuesday broadcast, hosted by GM Robert Hess. Qualification for the 2027 Esports World Cup will also be on the line once again.

Seven players began with a perfect 5/5, but only two got to 6/6: GMs Andrey Esipenko and Hans Niemann. In the sixth round, Esipenko defeated GM Steven Zierk, Niemann won over GM Oleksandr Bortnyk, while GMs Nikolas Theodorou and Alexander Grischuk drew against each other. Duda, who had only scored a draw in the third round, won against GM Dmitry Andreikin.

Those results set up the seventh-round battle between Esipenko and Niemann, which Esipenko won to move to 7/7. He was already up a piece in the final position when Niemann allowed his last 76 seconds to expire.

Duda, Theodorou, and GM Jingyao Tin were half a point behind Esipenko at this point. Tin, whose best Titled Tuesday finish in 25 efforts to date is eighth place, defeated Theodorou, seeking his second Titled Tuesday victory in 82 tries. Duda, meanwhile, ended Esipenko’s run at the perfect score. The bounty for that achievement moves to $3,500 next week, or the equivalent of first and third place combined.

Fittingly, around this time, GM Hikaru Nakamura was explaining to viewers the difficulties of Titled Tuesday: “This is a frickin’ tough tournament… It doesn’t matter how good you are… Titled Tuesday is a brutal event.”

Coming out of the ensuing break, Tin kept pace with Duda for much of the ninth round, but wasn’t able to resist 39.Qxc6, a capture with check that nonetheless lost.

The win gave Duda the sole lead with 8.5/9, and only teenage IM Aleksandr Usov was on 8/9. Usov, who made noise last week and finished 10th, reached eight points for the third straight week with a win over Vachier-Lagrave. Usov ultimately scored nine points to finish in third, his best effort so far in Titled Tuesday in the 51 events he’s played.

When Duda faced Usov in the 10th round, the result was looking like a lopsided Duda win. A brief Duda slipup in time pressure in the endgame—each player was below 20 seconds—wasn’t enough to change the final outcome, putting Duda a full point ahead of the field with just one round remaining.

Only two players, Arjun and Theodorou, were within striking distance. Duda seemed like he might easily secure the draw that would clinch outright first place, and even had one moment to strike. But Arjun kept the game going long enough for Duda to make an error similar to the one Tin had played versus him two rounds earlier: capturing with check, but soon getting mated or losing material.

Theodorou only made a draw, and took fourth place. Arjun’s tiebreaks thanks to missing round one were not good, and Duda secured victory despite the late loss. 

In another notable result, teenage WIM Zarina Nurgaliyeva scored nine points to finish in seventh place.
