The Conversation is a weekly dive into the most popular stories on Daily Kos and what it tells us about the national political environment.
Two big stories have dominated attention this week. The biggest is the hysterical reaction from Republicans over Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff of Georgia including three simple words in this sentence about President Donald Trump: “See, he doesn’t want to do the job. He wants to build his ballroom and travel with Natalie on their apparently defenseless flying palace gifted by the emir of Qatar.” (Emphasis mine.)
The GOP lost their minds because they know that White House assistant Natalie Harp, who writes love letters to Trump, is just freakin’ weird. New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman said on MS NOW that Harp is “his binky, for lack of a better way of putting it—a comfort blanket.”
It’s weird that an 80-year-old man, the leader of the free world, needs a binky, but that’s where we are now. The GOP freakout, intended to smear Ossoff, instead backfired by giving the story extra life.
And for a fun flashback, here’s the story we wrote about her back in November 2024:
Next up and more consequentially, things are looking really good for Democrats heading toward the November midterm elections.
Can November hurry up and get here?
As for the rest of the stories, well, they’re most about Trump being Trump, like him loving communist Kim Jong Un while pretending to be hysterical about supposed communists here at home.
Can 2027 hurry up and get here?
We’ll get straight to the point: The financial hardships that Daily Kos is facing this year are tough.
We continue to be paywall-free. We continue to be supported by our readers, not billionaires or corporations. But we need to bring in more revenue. We are leaning on our community more than ever to help make ends meet.
